Just beneath the tools on the patio where the bricks have been removed, one can see an interesting remnant of the original system, apparently formerly hooked up to what we knew as the redwood circuit. This is represented on the diagram as the rightmost dashed line leading to the question mark. Clearly, there did not used to be a concrete patio there. I sawed off that line at the concrete edge.
The entire redwood circuit was somewhat of a mystery, though now makes more sense after all this removal work. As we knew it, it consisted of only two sprinkler heads, contrasted with the 4 to 5 heads on each of the other backyard circuits. Once the cut-off pipes were discovered, it became clear that when the system was originally installed, there was less concrete and more foliage. There would have been at least 4 heads on this circuit, and possibly more.
On this circuit, and indeed all removal work, pipe which passes deep through the redwood bed was not removed, in order to avoid damage to the tree and the other plants which surround it. Instead the old pipes were snapped or cut, as appropriate to the condition of each pipe, as deep into the redwood bed as was easily accessible without damage.
